How to choose an AI interview assistant, honestly

There are a lot of AI interview assistants now, and the marketing all sounds the same. Most people pick one on a whim and find out the gaps in the middle of a real interview, which is the worst possible time. This is an honest guide to what actually matters, so you can choose well rather than luckily.

Does it sound like you, or like everyone?

The weakest tools hand every user the same generic script, and interviewers have started to recognise it. The thing that matters most is whether answers are built from your own CV and experience, in your own voice, so no two candidates say the same words. If a tool cannot ground its answers in your real background, it will eventually make you sound like a stranger reading a card.

Is it reliable when it counts?

The single most common failure is an answer that dies halfway through, or a tool that cuts out on a long technical reply. Ask how it handles long answers and flaky connections. A tool that streams answers reliably and never loses your place is worth far more than one with a longer feature list that stalls at the wrong moment.

Can it handle the technical moments?

Plenty of assistants are fine for behavioural chat and useless the moment a coding test or a diagram appears. If you interview for technical roles, check whether it can read what is shared on screen and help you explain it, and whether it prepares the follow up questions, because real interviews dig deeper and a single canned answer leaves you exposed.

Does it make you better, or just dependent?

This is the honest one. A tool designed purely for covert dependence wants you to keep needing it. The better ones also teach you: a practice mode that rehearses you out loud, and a debrief that reviews how you actually delivered so you improve each round. That is more defensible, and it means you walk into later stages genuinely stronger, not just propped up.

Is it private, and honest by design?

Check where your data goes and whether your keys stay on a secure backend rather than in the app. And prefer tools that will only say what is true to you, that will not invent employers or results you do not have, because a confident lie is the fastest way to lose an interview when they probe it.
